Item: In the tenth month of the same year, upon news that a foreign vessel had been sighted off the coast of Awa Province (Bōshū), he was ordered to remain prepared and on standby for the dispatch of vessels.
Item: In the twelfth month of the same year, as Mase Shinbei was in mourning (ikichū), he was ordered to serve as the senior coordinator (omotate) overseeing matters pertaining to the domain academy and the various training programs.
Item: In the third month of the first year of Bunsei, the Year of the Tiger [1818], since he had applied himself with diligence and had admirably directed the drilling and training exercises (kurineri) of the outside-rank retainers (tozama-shi) and the combined corps (yoriai-gumi), he was awarded, as a mark of commendation, one commander's baton (saihaisuru-tsuka / saihai ichi-e) as a reward.

Item: In the fifth month of the same year, upon the arrival of a foreign vessel off the coast of Kurihama within the domain's territory, he immediately rushed — together with the outside-rank retainers on duty and the combined corps (yoriai-gumi) in full force — to the Hiraneyama battery (o-daiba), where he performed the duties of standing guard and monitoring the dispatch of vessels. On the twenty-first day of the same month, the foreigners were ordered to set sail and return, and on the twenty-sixth day the garrison withdrew.
Item: In the seventh month of the same year, it was formally proclaimed that he had served with diligence during the previous autumn when a foreign vessel had been sighted off the coast of Awa Province (Bōshū), including in matters requiring improvised response.
