英語訳

[Right folio] Item: On the ninth day of the same month, upon news that a foreign vessel had been sighted off the coast of Bōshū, the outside-retainer corps and the combined assembly unit—outside of the regular annual duty roster—rushed in full to the Hiraneyama battery, and withdrew on the eleventh day of the same month. Item: In the third month of the second year of Bunsei, the year of the Rabbit [1819], following the domain's assumption of responsibility for Sagami Province (Sōshū), foreign vessels had drifted into the area on repeated occasions. During the preceding summer, a foreign vessel appeared for the first time in the waters off the domain's territory. He immediately rushed to Hiraneyama, arranged and managed the deployment of defensive positions along the full extent of the line, also dispatched ships, and performed guard duty for several days. In recognition of his diligent service, he was awarded two hiki of silk as a mark of commendation. [Left folio] Item: In the fourth month of the same year, it was formally announced that during the previous autumn, when a foreign vessel had been sighted off the coast of Shirahama in Bōshū, he was regarded as having rendered diligent service in the various duties pertaining to the defensive arrangements. Item: In the ninth month of the same year, it was noted that he had continually applied himself with diligence over many years to the training of helmsmen (tomoshu shugyō) at both domain outposts (o-jinya), for troops of all ranks (heavy and light). Although this fell outside the scope of his regular duties (yogei), as it was a discipline of paramount importance to coastal defense, he had been ordered to continue it. He was accordingly awarded a special gift of sake, and it was announced that he should apply himself with even greater diligence henceforth.
