錦貝は雅やかな観賞用の貝の王である。各地に産するが、丹後・但馬の海辺に出るものに勝るものはない。紀州には少なく、たまにあるものはその色が良くない。この貝を「撫子貝」と記した書物がある。撫子貝とも呼べる貝ではあるが、それ（本来の撫子貝）とは別物である。

総じて良い貝は春に多く打ち寄せられる。岩の多い海では小さな貝が砕けてなくなってしまう。細かい砂の荒い海辺に（良い貝が）ある。摂津の海はほとんどが温かく、内海であるため良い貝がない。

紀州の和歌浦・荒浜・加太の粟島の北浜などに行って見ると、貝が多い。泉州の海辺には良い貝がない。但州（但馬国）の竹野浦には良い貝が多い。丹後の太鼓浜・琴弾浜にも良い貝があるとのことで、私は

そこまで行っていないが、拾った人からもらったものである。紀州の熊野にも良い貝があるとのことで、もらって見た。その他、遠方には珍しい貝も良い貝もあるはずだが、私も行っておらず、行った人も拾って来ないので知らない。

相模国の鎌倉（雪ノ下）および江の島の辺りには貝を売る店が多く、この地にはむかしから良い貝が数多くあると（言われている）。

The *Nishiki-gai* (brocade shell) is the king of elegant shells for refined appreciation. It can be found in various regions, but nothing surpasses those that come from the shores of Tango and Tajima provinces. In Kishū (Kii Province), they are rare, and those occasionally found there are poor in color. There exists a book that records this shell under the name *Nadeshiko-gai* (pink shell). While it could indeed be called a *Nadeshiko-gai*, it is in fact a different shell from the one properly known by that name.

In general, fine shells wash ashore most abundantly in spring. In seas with many rocks, small shells are broken and thus scarce. Good shells are found on rough shores of fine sand. The seas of Settsu are mostly warm and sheltered as an inland sea, so no fine shells are found there.

When one visits the shores of Wakanoura, Arahama, and the northern beach of Awashima at Kada in Kishū, shells are plentiful. The shores of Senshu (Izumi Province) yield no fine shells. Takeno-ura in Tajima Province (*Tanshū*) has many fine shells. I have heard that Taikohama and Kotohikihama in Tango also have good shells; however, I myself have

not been there, and the shells I have were received from those who gathered them. I have also been told that fine shells exist in Kumano in Kishū, and I have seen some given to me. Beyond these places, there are surely rare and fine shells to be found in distant regions, but since I have not gone there myself, and those who have made the journey brought none back, I cannot say.

In Kamakura (Yukinoshita) in Sagami Province, and around Enoshima, there are many shops selling shells, and it has long been said that fine shells in great numbers can be found in this area.

I visited Wakanoura in Kishū during the Hōei and Shōtoku eras, and again this year. Beyond this, as years pass, things change greatly, and there are many cases where what I had heard about the names of shells does not match what I actually found.
