　　諸説

貝は艶と光沢があって大きすぎず、その色が鮮やかで、白いものは純白に、赤いものは深紅に、斑紋のあるものは色が際立っているものを良品とする。蛤の類で合わせ貝になるものは、両方の貝殻がきちんと対になって離れずにある（揃っている）ものを良品とする。

また、観賞・玩弄用の貝はあまりに小さすぎて、小豆や米粒ほどのものは見た目に映えない。一方、五当銭・十当銭ほどの大きさのものは大きすぎてよくない。ただ、そら豆ほどの大きさのものがちょうど良いとすべきである。

その他、生まれつき大きい貝もあれば、生まれつき小さい貝もある。小さいものの中からはより大きいものを選び、大きいものの中からは小さめのものを珍重するとよい。歌仙などに集める際には、その形がおおよそ揃っているものを良品とする。（そのような貝は）非常に得がたいものである。

**Various Theories**

Shells should have a lustrous sheen and not be overly large. Those whose colors are vivid are preferred: white shells should be a pure, clear white; red shells should be a deep crimson; and those with mottled patterns should display striking, well-defined markings. For shells of the *hamaguri* (clam) type that form matching pairs, it is best when both halves face each other and remain inseparable — that is, when a matched pair is kept intact.

Furthermore, when it comes to shells used for play and appreciation, those as tiny as an azuki bean or a grain of rice are not pleasing to the eye. Conversely, those the size of a *gotōsen* or *jūtōsen* coin are too large and also undesirable. A size roughly equivalent to that of a broad bean (*soramame*) should be considered just right.

Beyond this, there are shells that are large by nature and shells that are small by nature. Among the small ones, select those that are relatively larger; among the large ones, prize those that are on the smaller side. When assembling shells for a *kasen* collection and the like, it is best when their forms are generally uniform in size and shape. Such shells are exceedingly difficult to come by.
