(Continued from previous passage) This matter is recorded in the preface of the *Go-kasen* (Later Shell Immortals collection).
○ The varieties of shells are exceedingly numerous. Although I have gathered and recorded all that has come to my eyes and ears, it is not possible to exhaustively document every shell under heaven. I can only await the research of more learned scholars in the future.
○ Regarding the names and identities of shells — names such as *awabi* (abalone), *hamaguri* (clam), and *shijimi* (corbicula) are names that have been in common use throughout Japan from ancient times to the present. When it comes to small and minor shells, however, their names are by no means uniform, and there is much confusion and conflation. Moreover, a single species may exhibit variation, and what was originally impossible to describe by name has been forcibly named by later generations. As a result, there are regional dialect names, common names, and elegant classical names. Though I have collected all that I could find, these too cannot be exhaustively enumerated. Rather than resorting to Chinese names, I have designated the correct Japanese names as the primary names, and where common names and alternative names are used interchangeably, I append these below each entry. I record the etymology of the name, the physical characteristics, the noted production areas, and distinctions between places where the shell is and is not found.
○ The two sets of *Kasen-kai* (Shell Immortals) — both the earlier and the later — are accompanied by poems and illustrations. In this book, these are included as supplementary material without being reformatted separately; I simply list their names and note evaluations regarding cases of conflation.
