【Right Sheet, Upper Section】 They were urged to use not only the decocted medicines, miraculous medicines, and family-transmitted smallpox remedies that had been prepared and compounded in advance — applying them one after another — but also to make sure never to neglect patent medicines (medicines bought at shops) and to use them as well. Because of this encouragement, the parents who cared for their children resolved that "there is nothing to rely on but medicine," applied them wholeheartedly, and were unwavering in their nursing care. As a result, the kan no mushi (convulsion spirits) and the taidoku (fetal toxins) were immediately driven back by the miraculous medicines and found it difficult to torment the children further. All they could do was lie in wait, watching for any lapse in the parents' vigilance. At this time, the children suffering from smallpox were children who had been given Shinjugan — a medicine for expelling mushi — from the very time of their birth. Therefore, their inner constitution was robust and sound, the mushi were crushed and overpowered by Shinjugan, and were unable to obstruct the smallpox (from running its proper, manageable course). Though bitterly frustrated, the mushi had no recourse, 【Left Sheet, Upper Section】 and could only gnash their teeth in resentment. Word of this, however, soon reached the shrine of Handaina, and Inari-sama (the fox deity) consulted with Daruma-sama (the Bodhidharma figure), then stepped forward before the great deity Tametomo Daimyōjin and spoke in unison: "Indeed, this time, after all the smallpox gods had been summoned and gathered to this place, the kan no mushi, along with the plague gods and cold gods, saw through the lapse in the protection that had been entrusted to the smallpox gods, and attempted to reverse the progress of recovery that had been so painstakingly achieved. The miraculous medicines of every quarter fought and held them back; however, children with severe fevers are loudly crying out in delirium and will not take their medicines — and so their parents are truly at their wits' end with worry. We understand this to be entirely because the smallpox gods are neglecting their duty of watch and guard. Seeing things in this light, it is entirely…" (continued on next page)
