そこで、小児のむし（疳の虫）を退治するための第一の薬として、皇朝古来より伝わる神寿丸、加須のかんの薬（奇應丸）、救命丸、柳の虫、赤蛙、そのほか世間に存在するあらゆる妙薬が、ことごとく子どもの身を守ろうと申し合わせ、それぞれの効き目の道を急ぎながら、我も我もと勢いよく駆けつけた。すると、疳の虫や鬼灯虫はいうまでもなく、疫病神も風邪の神も、薬を子どもの体内に入れさせまいとして、子どもの熱をひどく高めて「お薬はいやだ、いやだ」と言わせるので、さすがに、

Thus, as the foremost medicines for expelling children's afflictions (kan no mushi), the ancient imperial remedy Shinjugan, the Kasu kan medicine (Kiōgan), Kyūmeigan, yanagi no mushi (willow worm remedy), red frog medicine, and all other miraculous medicines known throughout the world agreed among themselves to protect the bodies of children. Each hastening along their path of efficacy, they rushed forward one after another. However, the kan no mushi (convulsion spirits), hōzuki mushi (ground cherry bug spirits), the plague god, and the cold god all conspired to prevent medicines from entering the children's bodies — making children's fevers burn fiercely so that the children would cry out "I don't want medicine! I don't want it!" Because of this, even the parents could not manage to force open their children's mouths to make them swallow the medicines.
