疱瘡神の悪さによって子どもの身の上に過ちができるのではございません。子どもの持病と、親たちの育て方に油断があるからのことにて、疱瘡神はいずれも子どもに疱瘡を首尾よくいたさせて、面々もその手柄によって親たちに敬われ、尊ばれ、めでたく笹湯のお祝いを受けて、

人々に喜ばれたい――それが神の心でございますゆえ、何とぞこれまで疱瘡神を悪くお思いになっていたところをご勘弁くださいまして、子どもの親たちに疱瘡を軽くさせる心がけが千に一つもない（全く足りない）と仰せつけられくださるべきです。常々子どもを介抱いたすことはよろしいようなれども、愛情に溺れて毒になるものをも食べさせて、普段、虫気（むしけ）でもさほど驚かず、薬も与えず、灸もせず、放っておいて持病を蔵腸（内蔵）に蓄えさせた上に、疱瘡にとりつかれたとき、にわかに騒ぎ回ることは、返す返すも油断のいたし方（である）。それゆえ、このたびわれわれ疱瘡神と相談いたして、世間の疱瘡を過ちなきようにいたす手段を書き付けにいたしましたれば、何とぞ……

……これを親たちが慎み守りて、世の中へ生まれ出る子どもに苦しみをさせぬようにと仰せつけられくださるべし、と、その書き付けをぞ取り出しける。

"It is not through any wrongdoing on the part of the smallpox gods that misfortune befalls the children. It is because of the children's chronic ailments, and because of negligence in the parents' way of raising them. The smallpox gods, each and every one, wish to see the smallpox run its proper, successful course in the children, and through that achievement to be revered and honored by the parents, and to joyously receive the celebration of the sasa-yu bath —

— and to be celebrated by all. Such is the heart of the gods. Therefore, we humbly ask that you forgive whatever poor opinion you may have held of the smallpox gods until now, and instead declare to the parents of children that they are lacking in the least measure of care — not even one in a thousand — in the effort to make the smallpox light and manageable. Although it may appear that they are always tending to their children, in their excessive affection they allow the children to eat things that are harmful; they do not take proper heed when the child shows signs of mushi-ke (symptoms of worm-spirits) in ordinary times; they give no medicines, apply no moxa, leave things unattended, and allow chronic disease to accumulate within the viscera — and then, when smallpox takes hold, they suddenly fly into a panic. This, time and again, is the very nature of their negligence. For this reason, we have consulted with the smallpox gods on this occasion and have set down in writing the measures by which smallpox in the world may be managed without mishap. We humbly ask that you by all means…"
