つたへたる人のいへにてはほうそうをかろく

かるまちのはんだいなり天明神と申

そもそも、日本一の武者として聞こえたる鎮西八郎為朝大明神は、疱瘡を軽くお守りくださる御神にて、為朝の矢の根を持ち伝えたる人の家では、疱瘡を軽くすることは請け合いなりとぞ。ここに、笠井軽町の版台（はんだい）なり天明神と申し奉るは、疱瘡も軽い、麻疹（はしか）も軽い、御誓願なれば、あるとき為朝は、はるばるとこの笠井軽町（かさゐかるまち）の社（やしろ）へ参られて、稲荷大明神に申されけるは、「近頃、疱瘡の流行ること、春夏秋冬の古今なしに世並みはよけれども、子供の迷惑なり。お前（きさま）は昔と違い、疱瘡の世話をおろそかにいたさるるか。あまり疱瘡神どもがはばをいたすから、この度われらが矢先にかけて、疱瘡神をことごとく追い払わんと思えども、まずお前に聞き合わせに参ったが、いかがでございる」と⨁

⨁言われければ、稲荷様はこれを聞いて、「なるほど、ごもっともなことなり。まず、さっそく眷属に申し付けて、疱瘡神を

呼び集めまして、よくよく申し付けましょう。からしばらくお許しなされませ」と、疱瘡神たちのために謝った稲荷様こそ、ご親切なことなれ。それより、笠井軽町の稲荷様は、使い召しの狐を呼び集め、方々へ走らせ、疱瘡神を呼び寄せられけるが、この趣を聞いて、諸々に居たる疱瘡神たち、われもわれもと笠井軽町の稲荷様へ集まり《つぎへ》

Now then — renowned as the greatest warrior in all of Japan, the Great Deity Chinzei Hachirō Tametomo is a divine god who protects people from the severity of smallpox. In households that have preserved and passed down an arrowhead of Tametomo, it is guaranteed that smallpox will be mild. Here, at the Handa shrine in Kasai Karumachi, enshrined as the Tenmeijin (Heavenly Bright Deity), the divine vow is that smallpox shall be mild and measles shall be mild. One day, Tametomo traveled all the way to this shrine in Kasai Karumachi and spoke to the Great Deity Inari, saying: "Of late, the spread of smallpox knows no distinction of spring, summer, autumn, or winter — past or present — and while this may be well enough for the world at large, it brings great suffering to children. Have you, unlike in former times, grown negligent in tending to the matter of smallpox? The smallpox deities have been growing far too bold. I have half a mind to take aim with my arrows and drive every last one of those smallpox gods away — but I came first to consult with you. What say you?" ⨁

⨁Upon hearing this, Lord Inari said: "Indeed, you are entirely right. I shall straightaway instruct my retinue to summon the smallpox gods,

gather them together, and give them a thorough reprimand. Please grant them a brief reprieve for the moment." How very kind of Lord Inari, to plead on behalf of the smallpox gods! After that, the Inari deity of Kasai Karumachi called together the fox messengers in service and sent them running in every direction to summon the smallpox gods. Upon hearing of this matter, the smallpox deities who had been scattered here and there all came rushing, one after another, to gather before the Inari deity of Kasai Karumachi. →[continued on next page]
