仰せられける。
○このことは、はやくも湯の音峰の孫、嫡子、疱瘡神の方へ聞こえければ、神なりと為朝では、なかなかそりゃ敵いたされぬ。十二日の日数を過ごさず、少しも早く失せてしまうようにいたすべし。しかれども、気の早い為朝公なれば、われらが仲間ばかり言い訳に行きても、君が悪ければ、われわれになじみのある手遊び仲間を頼み、為朝へ取り成しを頼むがよろしかろうとて、

If you cannot fulfill this duty, then why do you sit upon the household shrine, proudly and arrogantly eat the red offerings placed before you, and expect to be venerated as the

Smallpox Deities? Whatever the circumstances, from this point on, see to it that no harm comes to the children!" — so declared [Tametomo], with great vigor and heroic spirit.
○ Now, these words reached the ears of the grandchildren and legitimate heirs of [the smallpox deity] Yunootomine before long. [They said among themselves:] "Whether he be a god or Tametomo, we simply cannot oppose him outright. We must see to it that [the illness] passes without delay before the twelve days are up, and that [the children] recover as swiftly as possible. However, since Lord Tametomo is so quick to act, even if only our own kind go to plead our case, if our lord [Tametomo] is displeased with us, then it would be best to call upon our familiar companions in play — those associated with us — and ask them to intercede with Tametomo on our behalf." And so,
