【右丁上段】
（だるまさまたちが）到着したが、このときためともは、だるまさまに向かって、「お前は疱瘡神の世話人のように、いつも離れずついていながら、子どもに怪我をさせて済みますか。ただし、悟りを開いた身では構わぬという気でいらっしゃるか。そのわけを聞こうではないか」と言われた。するとだるまさまは少し挨拶の思案を巡らしておられた。○このときだるまさまは、ためとも大明神の機嫌を取り直す工夫をしておられたが、何を言うにも激しい勢いの疱瘡神などには、ひと睨みで消えてしまい、三俵を被って逃げ出しても、ひと声かけられたら、笹湯も待たれず、干し鱈（ひだつ）よりほかはないと思われたので、問答などはなるまいと思案して、ただ手軽に掛け合うに如くはなしと思い、「なるほど、お前の御無理はご尤もなり。ただいまよりのちは疱瘡神たちとともに力いっぱい丹精して、万人に一人も怪我のなきようにいたすべし」と◐

さても疱瘡神たちは、版駄の社に寄り集まり、いろいろ言い訳をしておられたゆえ、いずくの疱瘡とも、疱瘡神の守りたもうことなかりしかば、子どもの地病の疳の虫をはじめ、胎毒その他さまざまの病の虫が蔓延り、また疫病神なども疱瘡の隙につけ込み、子どもに取りついて、おのれらが栄耀をなさんとするゆえ、子どもの迷惑となるようになりければ、子どもの親たちは「ここぞ大事の時なり」と医者を呼び寄せる者もあれば、妙薬を買い集めて介抱し、少しも油断なかりけた。

(Daruma and the others having arrived,) at this moment, Tametomo addressed Daruma, saying: "You are always at the side of the smallpox deity like a caretaker, never leaving their side, and yet you allow children to be harmed — are you not ashamed? Or perhaps, having attained enlightenment, you consider yourself above such concerns? I would hear your explanation." At this, Daruma fell into a moment of thoughtful deliberation. ○ At this time, Daruma was devising a way to win back the favor of the great deity Tametomo. Yet whatever he might say, faced with the fierce power of the smallpox deities — who with a single glare could make one vanish, and who, even if one fled hiding under a *sandawara* (rice-straw lid), could stop one dead with a single shout — it seemed that there was nothing to be done but submit, with no time even for *sasayu* (bamboo-grass hot water), and no recourse but dried cod (*hidatsu*). Deciding therefore that argument would be futile, Daruma thought the best course was simply to comply without fuss, and said: "Indeed, your grievance is entirely reasonable. From this moment forward, we shall work alongside the smallpox deities with all our might and dedication, so that not a single soul among ten thousand shall come to harm." ◐

◐ Having pledged this as firmly as a posted seal-notice, Daruma and the owl exchanged glances, blinking their eyes repeatedly, and [remained thus].

Meanwhile, the smallpox deities had gathered at the Handa Shrine, making all manner of excuses among themselves. As a result, there was no smallpox deity properly guarding the children anywhere, and so the worms of chronic childhood ailments — beginning with *kan no mushi* (the worm of irritability) — along with fetal toxins (*taidoku*) and all manner of disease-worms began to run rampant. Furthermore, gods of pestilence and epidemic, seizing upon the negligence of the smallpox deities, attached themselves to children in order to enjoy their own aggrandizement. This caused great suffering to the children, and so their parents, recognizing this as a critical moment, called for doctors, while others gathered miraculous medicines to nurse their children, sparing no effort whatsoever.
