Item: On the same day, as Lady Toyohime, the daughter of Lord Matsudaira Daizenno-Daibu (Munehiro), had passed away, the domain's Edo residential agent (rusuigashira) Arakawa Jūemon (Naoaki) submitted the following notification to the duty senior councilor (goyōban) Lord Matsudaira Izu-no-Kami:
Memorandum
The daughter of Matsudaira Daizenno-Daibu had been ill, but despite efforts at recuperation, she passed away on this 25th day of the month. She was the niece by adoption (yōkata) of Hyōbu-no-Taifu; however, as she was under seven years of age, no mourning period (kibuku) is observed, and we shall refrain from activities for one day. We hereby submit this notification accordingly.
Respectfully submitted,
25th day of the 6th month Retainer of Matsudaira Hyōbu-no-Taifu
Arakawa Jūemon
Item: On the 29th day of the 6th month, as a circular had previously been received from the Senior Inspectors (ōmetsuke) regarding the matter of soliciting donations (kanka) for the repair of temples and shrines throughout the provinces, the Senior Elders (karō) instructed the Inspectors (metsuke) to notify the domain's retainers and the townspeople and villages as follows:
Item: During last month in Edo, concerning those from temples and shrines who, for the purpose of soliciting assistance for temple and shrine repairs throughout the provinces, had received official permission for fundraising (kanka gomen), and carrying solicitation documents (kankaجō) co-signed by the Commissioners of Temples and Shrines (Jisha-bugyō), were making their rounds through Shogunal lands (goryō), private domains (shiryō), and temple and shrine estates (jisharyōchi) in towns and villages — it has been reported that in some places, the local lords (jitō) had previously issued orders halting such solicitations depending on the village, and there are places refusing to permit the solicitation. While it is at the discretion of the domain lord to halt private solicitations, as this is a matter of making rounds throughout the provinces with the official sanction of the authorities (kōgi), and as the solicitation documents bear the co-signatures of the Commissioners of Temples and Shrines…
