附江戸当地相楽ニ書通之儀用事者格別吉凶

一 諸道具之事
武具之儀者格別其外成次第少ニ致し尤麁物
相用当分家事之闕さる品遊興之道具一切無

但武具之儀とても分限不相応ニ華麗結構
之品無用ニ候縁頭鍔目貫類差料之儀ニ候得共
分限ニ相応ニ合候上重々物数奇無用ニ候印籠
提物此類者猶更彼是物数奇無用ニ候次ニ家来共
脇指不相応之拵向後無用ニ候事
附女之道具者表立奉公筋之道具ニ而無之

附（付則）：江戸と当地（福井）との間の書状のやり取りについて、用件のあるものは格別として、吉凶の見舞い等の文通は無用とすること。
一、諸道具のこと
武具については格別として、その他はできる限り少なくし、なおかつ粗末なものを使うこと。当分の間、家事に欠かせない品を除き、遊興のための道具は一切無用とすること。
但し、武具についても分限（身分・財力）に不相応な、華美で立派な品は無用とする。縁頭・鍔・目貫の類は、差料（さしりょう：刀装）のことではあるが、分限に相応した上で、くれぐれも物数寄（ものずき：凝りすぎること）は無用とする。印籠・提物（さげもの）の類はなおさら、あれこれと物数寄することは無用とする。次に、家来共の脇差についても、不相応な拵え（こしらえ：装飾）は今後無用とすること。
附（付則）：女性の道具については、表立った奉公筋（おおやけの勤めに関わる）の道具でない場合は、なおさらできる限り数を少なくし、櫛・笄（こうがい）・簪（かんざし）等に金銀を用いることは無用とする。持参していても、今後は停止とすること。

Supplementary note: Regarding written correspondence between Edo and the home domain, correspondence relating to necessary business matters is to be treated as exceptional, but letters of inquiry sent on the occasion of joyous or sorrowful events (kikkyō) and the like are prohibited.
Item: Concerning various implements and furnishings (shodogu)
Weapons and armor (bugu) are to be treated as exceptional; all other items are to be kept to as small a number as possible, and only plain, unrefined articles should be used. For the time being, items indispensable to the running of the household are exempted, but implements for amusement and entertainment are entirely prohibited.
Proviso: Even with respect to weapons and armor, items of lavish and elaborate craftsmanship that are out of proportion to one's means and standing (bungen) are prohibited. The fuchi (collar fittings), tsuba (hand guards), and menuki (grip ornaments) are indeed fittings for one's personal sword (sashiryō), but even so, excessive connoisseurship and indulgence in these items beyond what is appropriate to one's station is prohibited. As for inrō (medicine cases) and sagemonо (hanging decorative objects), one is even less entitled to indulge in fussy connoisseurship of such things. Furthermore, retainers' short swords (wakizashi) with fittings and mountings (koshirae) disproportionate to their station are henceforth prohibited.
Supplementary note: Regarding the implements of women — those that are not equipment required for formal public service — the number of such items should be reduced as much as possible, and the use of gold or silver in combs (kushi), kōgai (hairpins), and kanzashi (hair ornaments) is prohibited. Even items already in one's possession are henceforth to be suspended from use.
Item: Concerning wedding ceremonies (konrei)
Although rules on this matter have previously been established, henceforth they are to be made even more modest. Woven textiles such as sha-aya (gauze-weave silk), chirimen (crepe silk), rinzu (damask silk), donsu (satin damask), and shusu (satin) are prohibited for any purpose other than clothing.
