一、松前（藩）が支配する島（蝦夷地）の内、一部の区域のみを領分としている。その島の内を、主（藩主）の直轄場所と家臣の場所とに配分するのである。「場所」とは、領分のことである。各海辺の区域がそれぞれ一場所をなし、おおよそ五十里、あるいは七十里の範囲にわたる。島の周囲の浜辺に、所々に分かれて領分が存在する。浜辺のみが対象であり、奥地はすべて未開の地で、人の住まない深山や広野ばかりである。さて、この場所を、松前の町人たちがそれぞれの地頭（領主）に願い出て、蝦夷の土人（先住民）を世話・保護したい旨を申し出る。納める運上金の多寡を検討した上で許可が下りる。これを「場所請負」という。その請負……

Article 1: Of the island (Ezo/Hokkaido) under the jurisdiction of the Matsumae (domain), only a portion of it constitutes their territory. Within the island, the land is allocated between places under the direct control of the domain lord and places belonging to his retainers. The term "basho" (場所) is equivalent to "territory" or "domain." Each coastal zone constitutes one basho, spanning approximately fifty to seventy ri in extent. These territories are distributed at various points along the coastline surrounding the island. Only the coastal areas are included; the interior is entirely uncultivated land, consisting of nothing but deep mountains and vast wilderness where no people dwell. Now, the townspeople of Matsumae petition their respective domain lords (jitokata), expressing their wish to care for and provide for the Ezo indigenous people. Permission is granted based on consideration of the amount of the unjo-kin (trade tax) to be paid. This system is called "basho-ukeoi" (place contracting). The contracting…
