〇これはすなわち「参」の一種であり、五臓に配当される五つの参がある。人参は脾に入る（黄参）、沙参は肺に入る（白参）、玄参は腎に入る（黒参）、牡蒙（紫参）は肝に入る、丹参は心（新）に入る（赤参）。その苦参は腎命の薬である。古人が紫参を退けて苦参を称えたのは、この意義に達していなかったからに過ぎない、云々。

【草類】
この植物は、花卉園芸業者（花戸）が「丹参」と呼ぶものであり、物産家が「丹参」と呼ぶものは、花卉業者の言う「鍬形草（くわがたそう）」のことである。また「岩紫参」というものもあり、箱根山の権現坂に多く産出する。形状は同じであるが、その葉は小さく硬い。

This plant is what flower dealers (floral cultivators) call "Tanjin (丹参 / Red Sage)," while what natural products specialists (物産家) call "Tanjin" is what flower dealers refer to as "Kuwagatasō (鍬形草 / hoe-shaped herb)." There is also a variety called "Iwa-shijin (岩紫参 / Rock Purple Ginseng)," which grows abundantly on Gongen-zaka slope on Mt. Hakone. Its form is similar, but its leaves are smaller and harder.
