　　　　鶏腸菜ハ味微苦ク咀メハ之ヲ涎滑ニシテ莖ノ中ニ無縷微紫色
　　　　花亦紫也ト云此 矣（ナラン）
　　　　鵞腸菜ハ味甘ク莖中空ニシテ有縷花白色以テ此ヲ爲別種ト

農政全書ニ云鶏腸菜ハ莖方ニシテ色紫其葉對生ス似テ 菱（ヒシ）ノ
　　　　葉ニ紅粉花ヲ此一物乎

群芳暦巻條ニ載

救荒本草ニ曰綿絲菜《割書：タヒラコ｜カワラケナ｜》　土盌菜（カハラケナ）　田平子（タビラコ）　佛（ホトケ）の 座（ザ）

七種菜ノ中田平子佛ノ座と稱スル者最多シ黄花菜ヲモ田平子トス《割書：大和本草｜》
此草俗ニ牟未古也之（ムマノコヤシ）と云 土器菜（カハラケナ）ノ名無之以テ何ヲ是（ゼ）也トス欤群芳暦ニハ
當草ヲ詳ニス今 見（ケンス）スルニ救荒ヲ綿絲菜ニ無シ名田平子ノ載ス別ニ婆々指甲菜（カハラケナ）ヲ

現代語訳

『本草綱目』によると
　　　鶏腸草　　　○カワラケナ　○オハコベ　○タビラコ
　　　（ムラサキハコベ）　人日七草のその菜也

　　　鶏腸菜は味が少し苦く、噛むと涎（よだれ）が出るほど滑らかで、茎の中に縷（すじ）がなく、微かに紫色を帯びる。花もまた紫色であるというから、これがそれであろう。
　　　鵞腸菜は味が甘く、茎の中が空洞で縷（すじ）があり、花は白色である。これをもって別種とする。

『農政全書』によると、鶏腸菜は茎が四角で色が紫く、葉は対生し、菱の葉に似て、紅色の花をつけるとある。これは同一のものであろうか。
　　　そうではない。最も小さな紙に違いが既に記されている。

『群芳暦』の巻の条に記載あり。

『救荒本草』によると、綿糸菜（タヒラコ・カワラケナ）、土盌菜（カワラケナ）、田平子（タビラコ）、仏の座。

七草の中で田平子・仏の座と称するものが最も多い。黄色の花の菜も田平子とする（『大和本草』）。この草は俗に「むまのこやし」と言う。土器菜（カワラケナ）という名は見当たらないが、何をもってそれとするのであろうか。『群芳暦』では当草を詳しく説明している。今、『救荒本草』を見ると、綿糸菜に田平子の名は記されておらず、別に婆々指甲菜（カワラケナ）を考察すべきである。

『和漢三才図会』柔滑菜の項に

『増補多識編』柔滑菜の項に
　　　鶏腸草　和名：今按に「むらさきはなのはこべ」

　　　『多識編』には土盌菜の名義がない。
　　　『群芳暦』では鶏腸草をカワラケナとする。婆々指甲菜もまた土器菜と呼ぶ。二つのものが同名であろう。『救荒本草』の鶏腸菜は花と葉が合致しない。

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　『農政全書』に婆々指甲菜と鶏腸菜を分けて載せているが、これは同一のものであろう。『和漢三才図会』の婆々指甲菜（ハバシュウサイ）はよく土盌菜（カワラケナ）に一致する。

英語訳

According to "Bencao Gangmu" (Honzo Komoku):
　　　Chicken Intestine Herb (Keichōsō) ○Kawarakena ○Ohakoben ○Tabirako
　　　(Murasaki Hakoben) — One of the seven herbs of Jinjitsu (New Year's Day)

　　　The chicken intestine herb (keichōsai) tastes slightly bitter, and when chewed produces a slippery saliva; its stem has no thread-like fibers and is slightly purple in color. Its flowers are also said to be purple — this must be it.
　　　The goose intestine herb (gachōsai) tastes sweet, its stem is hollow with thread-like fibers, and its flowers are white. This is considered a separate species.

According to "Nōsei Zensho" (Complete Book of Agricultural Administration), the chicken intestine herb has a square stem and purple color, leaves that are opposite-paired and resemble water-chestnut leaves, and bears pink flowers. Could this be the same plant?
　　　No, it is not. The slightest difference has already been noted.

Recorded in the relevant volume of "Gunpōreki."

According to "Kyūkō Honzō" (Famine Relief Materia Medica): Cotton Thread Herb (Tabirako/Kawarakena), Earth Bowl Herb (Kawarakena), Tabirako, Hotoke-no-za (Buddha's Seat).

Among the seven herbs, what is called Tabirako and Hotoke-no-za is most numerous. Yellow-flowered plants are also called Tabirako (according to "Yamato Honzo"). This herb is commonly called "umanokoyashi" (horse manure herb). The name "Kawarakena" (Earth Vessel Herb) is not found — what exactly is it based upon? "Gunpōreki" provides a detailed explanation of this herb. Looking now at "Kyūkō Honzō," the name Tabirako does not appear under Cotton Thread Herb, and "Baba-shikomuna" (Kawarakena) should be investigated separately.

According to "Wakan Sansai Zue," in the section on soft and slippery vegetables:

According to "Zoho Tashiki-hen," in the section on soft and slippery vegetables:
　　　Chicken Intestine Herb — Japanese name, per current examination: "murasaki hana no hakoben"

　　　In "Tashiki-hen," the meaning of the name "Earth Bowl Herb" is absent.
　　　In "Gunpōreki," the Chicken Intestine Herb is identified as Kawarakena. Baba-shikomuna is also called Earth Vessel Herb. These two things likely share the same name. The Chicken Intestine Herb in "Kyūkō Honzō" does not match in terms of flowers and leaves.
