黄連の和産には数品がある。加州菊葉黄連一種は上品、日光三葉一種は中品、日光細葉一種は下品、同じく芹葉大葉一種は中品、伊豆芹葉小葉一種は中品、諸州川芎葉一種は中品。この外に一つ和加葉の者があり中品だが、産地は未だ不明である。

予が言うには、黄連は加州金沢、越前、佐渡、越後、奥州、羽州から産出する。その他信州から来る物を俗に蝦黄連と呼ぶ。しかし加州の産は菊葉と呼ぶもので、後に写生した様子は大いに異なっている。芹葉の黄連と呼ぶ者がまさにこれである。本草には「四月に黄花を開き、六月に実を結ぶ」とあるが、時候が大いに違っている。

There are several varieties of Japanese coptis. The Kaga chrysanthemum-leaf coptis is of superior grade, the Nikko three-leaf variety is of medium grade, the Nikko narrow-leaf variety is of inferior grade, the celery-leaf broad-leaf variety is of medium grade, the Izu celery-leaf small-leaf variety is of medium grade, and the Ligusticum-leaf variety from various provinces is of medium grade. Besides these, there is one variety with Japanese-style leaves of medium grade, but its place of origin is still unknown.

I say that coptis is produced in Kanazawa in Kaga Province, Echizen, Sado, Echigo, Ōshū, and Ushū. Those from Shinshū and elsewhere are commonly called "shrimp coptis." However, the Kaga product is called "chrysanthemum-leaf," and when I later made drawings, they appeared quite different. What is called "celery-leaf coptis" is precisely this. The pharmacopoeia states that it "blooms yellow flowers in the fourth month and bears fruit in the sixth month," but this differs greatly from the actual seasons.
