白瑞香（オニシバリ）
木類
『本草一家言』によると、白瑞香を俗に胡椒の木と呼ぶものは越橘である。
西土（中国）の胡椒は蔓性である。胡椒の木には毒がある。○『越橘福州府志』
によると、越橘の花は瑞香のように白く、幹は黄楊のようで、実は朱櫻のようである云々。
元寿が言うには、日本の俗称で白瑞香を胡椒の木と呼ぶのは誤りである。白瑞香は
俗に夏坊主と呼び、夏になると葉がない。黄瑞香は俗に三ツ股と呼ぶ。
葉は瑞香とよく似ていて見分けが困難である。花は大いに異なる。日本に胡
椒はない。越橘についてはさらに考証が必要である。

According to "Honzō Ikka-gen," what is commonly called "pepper tree" referring to white zuikō is actually etsukyū (cowberry).
Pepper from the western lands (China) is vine-growing. The pepper tree is poisonous. ○ According to "Etsukyū Fukushū Fuzhi,"
the flowers of etsukyū are white like zuikō, the trunk is like boxwood, and the fruit is like red cherry, etc.
Genjū says that the Japanese custom of calling white zuikō "pepper tree" is incorrect. White zuikō is
commonly called natsubōzu (summer monk) because it has no leaves in summer. Yellow zuikō is commonly called mitsumata (three-pronged).
The leaves closely resemble zuikō and are difficult to distinguish. The flowers are greatly different. There is no pepper
in Japan. Etsukyū requires further investigation.
