[Right Folio] Record of Offerings (*gobiry ō*) Brought by the Townspeople of the Seven Districts (*shichichō hyakushō*) | Amount | District | Amount | District | |---|---|---|---| | 1 shō 3 gō | Minamizushi-chō | 6 gō | Okamoto-chō | | 1 shō | Nakaoōji-chō | 1 shō 8 gō | Ikedono-chō | | 1 shō 5 gō | Takehana-chō | 8 gō | Yamamoto-chō | | 3 shō | Umegatsуji-chō | | | [Left Folio] New Year's Day (First Day of the First Month) At the Hour of the Rabbit (*u no koku*, approximately 6:00 a.m.) [the shrine attendants (*jinnin*) announce the visit three times], the shrine officials (*shashi*), each dressed [in *sokutai* formal court robes, accompanied by servants in white robes (*hakucho*)], assemble at the *Samurai-dokoro* (待所, the Attendants' Hall). [Those in charge of *on'myō* (陰陽, yin-yang rites) and *tengū* (転供, relay offerings) assemble first at the shrine precincts.] Once all are assembled, the *Shoshi* (所司, Administrative Officer) asks, as is customary: "Shall the divine offerings (*shinkū*) be dispatched?" The *kannushi* (Chief Priest) replies that they shall proceed. All rise from their seats and take their places at the *Tsuchiya* (土屋, earthen house/waiting area). The *kannushi* and *hafuri* priests take their places from the upper position; the *negi* priests follow in order. Beginning with the *gon no hafuri* (権祝, Junior *Hafuri*) and below, the divine offerings are dispatched in sequence [carried by the *tone* (刀禰, senior shrine servants)]. The shrine attendants (*jinnin*) call out "*Onsaki*" (御先, "Make way!"). The *negi* group [crossing the *sunoko-bashi* (簀子橋, slatted bridge)], along with the *on'myō* (yin-yang) officiants standing near the *Tama-bashi* (玉橋, Jewel Bridge), perform purification (*harae*) of the divine offerings. The bearers of the *negi* group's offerings proceed via the Tama-bashi, the Tower Gate (*rōchūmon*), and other structures to arrive at the West Offering Hall (*Nishi Gokuusho*). The bearers of the *hafuri* group's offerings proceed via Kataoka and the Connecting Gallery (*Watadono*), entering through the Rear Gate (*Ura-gomon*) to arrive at the East Offering Hall (*Higashi Gokuusho*). Next, the shrine officials rise from the *Tsuchiya* [around the time the offerings enter the Sakura Gate (*Sakura-mon*)]. The *on'myō* officiants perform purification of the officials' persons near the Tama-bashi. The *kannushi*, *negi*, and all the *negi* priests cross the *sunoko-bashi* via the *negi* route; the *shōshuku* (正祝, Senior *Hafuri*) and lower *hafuri* priests cross the *sunoko-bashi* via the *hafuri* route. At the stone-edged area north of the Bridge Hall (*Hashidono*), officials of both groups line up together. After the purification by the *on'myō* officiants is complete, they separate: the *negi* group proceeds via the Tama-bashi, Tower Gate, and Middle Gate to take their places in the *Suki-rō* (透廊, open corridor); the *hafuri* group proceeds via Kataoka and the Connecting Gallery to take their places at the East Connecting Gallery (*Higashi Watadono*). Once the seating on both left and right sides is settled, the *azukari* (預, Custodian) [text continues on the next page]
