The Fourteenth Day: Otana-e (御棚会, Ritual of the Sacred Shelf)
When the appointed time arrives, a notice is given (three times, by order of the *sō-bugyō* [general superintendent], communicated to the *shoshi* [shrine administrators] and *jinin* [shrine servants], as customary). The *shashi* (shrine priests, wearing *jōe* [purified robes] and *sashiugi* [formal divided skirts]; the two officials of Kibune Shrine are not in attendance) take their seats at the *tsuchiya-za* (土屋座, the earthen-house seating area). After the divine offerings (*shinku*) and all the officials have assembled, the *shoshi* comes to the lower section of the *tsuchiya* and inquires about the ceremony of dispatching the divine offerings. Then the divine offerings of the sacred shelf (*otana*) are dispatched. The six nobles (*rokkei*; each advances first carrying one offering wand [*hei*]) are each accompanied by one *shōjin-tōnin* (精進頭人, abstinence leader). The *jinin* (shrine servants) follow in advance, and the offerings are placed between the *Noritoya* (祝詞屋, prayer house) and the *O-yumi* (御弓, sacred bow hall) (with west as the upper seat). Next, the *shikan* (shrine officials) rise from the *tsuchiya-za*. The two officials of Kataoka, the two of Ōta, the two of Nara, the two of Sawada, and the two of Ujigami proceed directly to their respective shrines. Of the five divisions (*gokan*), the two officials of Shingū and Wakamiya pass over the *Tamabashi* (玉橋, jewel bridge), enter through the *Rōmon* (楼門, tower gate) and *Chūmon* (中門, middle gate), and take their seats before the deity (under the eaves of the *Mifudaya*, with west as the upper position, facing north). The *shōjin-tōnin* takes his seat under the eaves of the covered corridor (*wataridō*) before the Wakamiya shrine, to the east of the *Heijūmon* (塀重門, walled double gate) of the small garden (with west as the upper seat, facing south; each sits on a round rush mat [*enza*]). The offering wands of the six nobles are set up on the north side of the Hajio Shrine (土師尾社), and the *shoshi-bettō* (所司別当, administrator) and *azukari* (預, deputies) gather around the *tsuchiya* and Ojio Shrine area. The Chōya (庁屋, Administrative Hall) Ceremony
The seating of the shrine officials is as customary (the *kogashira* [small-unit leader] brings a standing lamp: one lamp for the *negi* seats, one for the *hafuri* seats, one for the *mokudai* seats). Before this, the sacred shelves (*otana*) of the six nobles are carried and placed in the south garden of the *chōya*. The shrine officials and the abstinence leaders (*shōjin-tōnin*) in retreat take their seats (the *hafuri* side sits in the next seats). The *jinin* serve the *gochō-meshi* (御庁飯, ritual meal of the administrative hall). The *mokudai* (目代, deputies) come on duty from the worship hall (*haiden*) of the Nara Shrine. Two *jinin* carry torches, and the *yatone* (矢刀禰, a ritual functionary) loads the *keibun* (啓文, formal letter/announcement) onto a *hegi* (片木, thin wooden tray) and leads as a vanguard, passing by the sacred shelf (*otana*)…
