しかしながら、ジャワから長崎に持参する日数はおよそ一か月かかり、その間に種痘の効力が軽くなってしまうか、あるいは全く効果がなくなってしまうため、接種することができなくなってしまう。そのため、その効力は薄れてしまい、一度も感染予防効果を得ることがなかった。ところが、このたび長崎の医師楢林宗建という者が、来航したオランダ人モンニッケという者と相談して、その種痘を持参させ、昨年酉年（安政4年・1857年）の七月中に長崎で三人の子供に接種したところから諸国に伝播し、同年冬十一月中に佐賀藩主がその藩において種痘を実施し、その種痘を江戸に取り寄せなさった。

それ以来、私たちもまたその種痘を呼び寄せて数百人に接種を試みたところ、西洋の書籍に論じられている通り、一人も失敗例を見ることがなかった。この牛痘の優れている点は、数百人が一つの部屋にいても、接種した子供以外は一人もこれに感染することがなく、また接種した箇所以外の他の部位に一つの発疹も現れるのを見ないことである。西洋諸国では往昔、重篤な天然痘が流行し、多くの小児がこれが原因で死亡したため、軽い天然痘の種を接種して重篤な天然痘を免れさせていた。

However, since it takes approximately one month to transport the vaccine from Java to Nagasaki, the potency of the vaccine weakens or becomes completely ineffective during this time, making inoculation impossible. Therefore, its efficacy diminished and no immune response was ever achieved. Recently, however, a Nagasaki physician named Narabayashi Sōken consulted with a visiting Dutch person named Mohnike and had him bring the vaccine material. After inoculating three children in Nagasaki in the seventh month of last year (Year of the Rooster, 1857), it spread to various provinces. In the winter of the same year, in the eleventh month, the Lord of Saga implemented vaccination in his domain and had the vaccine material brought to Edo.

Since then, we too have obtained this vaccine and tried inoculating several hundred people. As discussed in Western books, we have not seen a single failure. The excellence of this cowpox is that even when several hundred people live in one room, no one except the inoculated child becomes infected, and no eruptions appear anywhere else on the body other than the inoculation site. In Western countries in ancient times, severe smallpox epidemics occurred and many children died from it, so they inoculated mild smallpox material to help them avoid severe smallpox.
