Nakasen-dō, Usui District, Jōshū Province
Regarding the petition submitted from the above post station: From the 28th day of the 6th month to the 5th day of this month, Mount Asama erupted violently and ash fell, accumulating to about the thickness of frost. From around the 6th hour of evening on the 6th day of this month until the hour of the sheep (hitsuji) on the 8th day, there were continuous tremors day and night without pause, and stones and sand fell. From the hour of the horse (uma) until past the hour of the monkey (saru), for about two and a half hours, it was dark as night, and we could barely manage our affairs even with lanterns lit. During this severe period, stones and sand accumulated to a thickness of about one shaku and one sun, and in places where it collected, it reached one shaku, five to six sun in depth. Among the weaker buildings, two houses of those who served in the official horse relay service, as well as numerous back houses and small houses, were crushed.
This was reported in the petition. As for field crops, it goes without saying they were destroyed, and there is no green grass either, causing immediate hardship due to lack of fodder for horses, as reported in the petition. The above.
This concerns my administrative district: four post stations on the Nakasen-dō in Shinshū and Jōshū provinces. Due to the stones and sand that fell from Mount Asama's eruption, particularly the three stations in Shinshū province have become virtually abandoned. However, since the eruption has not yet subsided, even the clerks stationed in that area cannot go to conduct inspections, as has been repeatedly reported. While I will report the details later, I hereby submit this preliminary report. The above.
