...within the Tone River. From last night until around the 9th and 8th hour this morning, buildings were damaged, with 5-6 sun square pillars, beams of 4-5 shaku circumference, sills, lintels, door boards, connecting beams, girders, and roofs being blown away. Occasionally bamboo tubes, as well as stacked boxes, mortars, pestles, buckets, bowls and such items, and pine and cedar trees from 5-6 shaku to about 1 jō in height had their branches broken and scraped, with both roots and tips becoming like bamboo grass, flowing so abundantly in the river for a span of 60-70 ken that boat passage became difficult. Then black muddy water came flowing, running 3-4 shaku deep. Men, women, and monks who drowned numbered 60 people so far, and 7-8 horses flowed along the riverbank. We do not know how many flowed in the middle of the river. Regarding this, when we went by boat to observe, we found a broken saddle with "Jōshū Gunma-gun Kawashima Village" written on it, which we placed at Gongendō riverbank. When we inquired with boatmen from a place called Jōshū Fujinoki riverbank, they confirmed that Kawashima is a place with hot spring resorts nearby, about 20 chō inland from Ikaho. Perhaps due to this muddy water, carp, catfish, conger eels and such floated up in the water and gathered at the riverbank, dying in great numbers. As there was a previous official notice about this, and because this is a major disaster, we respectfully report this through the post station relay system.
