Village Elder: Nizaemon 1. Petition to Lord Ina Hanzaemon as follows: Yesterday on the 9th, from the hour of the Monkey (around 3 PM), the water of the Edo River became like mud, extremely strange. We do not know from where it flowed, but rooted standing trees were broken and snapped, household goods and lumber were all reduced to fragments, and everything was swept away across the entire area. Moreover, human corpses and horses appeared in pieces, flowing through in great numbers. After the fifth hour of the night (around 8 PM), the flowing debris decreased, and thereafter the flow stopped. This being truly an unprecedented calamity, we hastily report this matter first. End.
