The figure to the right depicts a building with a frontage (maguchi) of nine shaku, showing a tile-roofed structure in which diagonal braces (sujikai) in a cross (jūmonji) pattern have been cut and fastened into the short upright posts (tsuka-bashira) located beneath the ground ridge beam (ji-mune) and above the main beam (hari). Moreover, even in the case of tenement row houses (nagaya) of ten or twenty ken in length, one should follow this diagram and attach diagonal braces at several points throughout.
〇 In general, houses and tenement row houses lining the streets of the city invariably have eaves (hisashi) at both the front and rear. Upon careful examination of how these eaves are attached, one finds in every case that the construction is extremely rough and careless. According to the customary practice of Edo townhouses, a large penetrating beam (ō-nuki) is pressed horizontally against the front pillar (omote-bashira) of the main building (omoya) by means of a notched joint (kikkake), nailed with six-sun nails, and then

rafter timbers (taruki) are laid across between this large penetrating beam and the eave purlin (keta), fastened with ten six-sun nails each into both the ō-nuki and the keta. The structure is held in place solely by the tensile pull of these rafters, and this construction method is uniform in all directions. The craftsmen, too, appear to believe this is the proper and sufficient way to build, and furthermore, in some cases the eaves are even tiled, imposing an extraordinary additional load upon this inadequate structure. Consequently, during the great earthquake on the night of the second day of the tenth month of the recent Year of the Rabbit (U), the large penetrating beam (ō-nuki) holding the rafter was the first to give way; the main building (omoya) and the eaves (hisashi) were torn apart; people were crushed by the weight of the fallen roof tiles; they were killed at doorways as they tried to flee; or they were struck down in the street. All of these cases are the result of leaving contracted construction work (nyūsatsu-fushin) entirely to the discretion of craftsmen, allowing them to do as they pleased.
