— doing as they please and cutting corners, resulting in extremely careless construction. This is truly a deplorable state of affairs. Therefore, in order to escape such great disasters, one should pass a penetrating beam (nuki) through both the pillar of the main building (omoya) and the pillar of the eaves (hisashi), and, as shown in the figure to the left, drive wedge-pins (komisen) into both pillars so as to firmly connect and secure the main building and the eaves together. Even if such a penetrating beam were to be installed, how much expense could it possibly amount to? For a mere trifle in labor costs, one may escape a great disaster — and this construction method should be carefully studied by reference to the diagram provided.
