右の図は、母屋の柱と庇の柱とに貫を差し通し、こみせんを打ち込んで、庇が離れないよう手堅く繋ぎ留めた図である。たとえ長さ十間・二十間の長屋造りの庇であっても、間口二間あるいは三間の間に数か所、このように繋いだならば、いかなる激烈な大地震・大嵐・竜巻があっても、破壊（やぶれくずれ）・崩墜（おちる）の恐れは決してあるまい。なお、庇にも筋違いを打つべき箇所があれば、工夫して切り込んで打ち付けるべきである。

The figure to the right illustrates the method by which a penetrating beam (nuki) is passed through both the pillar of the main building (omoya) and the pillar of the eaves (hisashi), with wedge-pins (komisen) driven in so as to firmly connect and secure the eaves so that they do not come apart. Even in the case of the eaves of a long tenement building (nagaya) measuring ten or twenty ken in length, if connections are made at several points within every two or three ken of frontage in this manner, then no matter how violent a great earthquake, fierce storm, or tornado may be, there shall absolutely be no danger of collapse or destruction. Furthermore, wherever there are locations in the eaves where diagonal bracing (sujiちがい) should be installed, one should devise a means to notch and attach them accordingly.

For this reason, storehouses of this kind were utterly destroyed in the great earthquake of the recent Year of the Rabbit, and proved to be entirely useless in times of emergency. Moreover, they were all consumed by the fires that broke out in the aftermath of the earthquake. Therefore, my method is to never use high-quality or expensive materials for pillars and the like, but rather to employ knotty, poor-quality cypress (hinoki) timber — pieces of four-by-six or five-by-six angles with some natural rounding — without planing them at all...
