外面（がいめん）の小前（こまえ）の切り欠きも浅くし、ただ四隅の柱だけは八寸角を用いるが、これもまた釿打ち（ちょうなうち）のみにて鉋（かんな）をかけず、ただ内面の角を二寸ほど切り欠いて除くべきである。なお、差し口を堅固に造ろうとすれば、大きな費用がかかって耐えられないから、やはり入札普請にして、左の図のように内面に筋違いを十字形に打つべきである。この筋違いは、一尺角の桧木で節の多い粗悪材を厚さ一寸の板に挽き割り、長短ほどよく切って、すべての柱に深さ一寸ずつ切り込み、堅固に打ち込んで、三百目以上の大釘を一柱につき三本ずつ打ち込むべきである。

The notching on the exterior small-front (komae) surfaces should also be kept shallow, and only the pillars at the four corners need be of eight-sun square timber; however, these too should be finished only with adze-work (chōna-uchi) without planing, and merely the interior corners should be cut away and removed to a depth of about two sun. Furthermore, if one attempts to construct the joinery (sashiguchi) with great rigidity and strength, the cost becomes unbearable; therefore, it is better to proceed with competitive-bid construction (nyūsatsu-fushin), and, as shown in the figure on the left, diagonal braces (sujiちがい) should be installed in a cross pattern on the interior surfaces. These diagonal braces should be made by sawing knotty, poor-quality cypress (hinoki) timber of one-shaku square cross-section into boards one sun thick, cutting them to appropriate lengths, notching each pillar to a depth of one sun, driving the braces in firmly, and then driving three or more large nails of over three-hundred-me in weight into each pillar.
