右の図は、二間（約3.6メートル）の土蔵の戸口前面の内側に、一尺幅の板を割ったものでX字形の筋違いを入れ、柱ごとに切り込んで打ち付けた図である。入札普請（競争入札による建築）においては、非常に安価な粗材・悪木を柱として使い、鉋がけもしないため、大工の手間もさほどかからない。しかしながら、内面の四方にX字形の筋違いを図のように打ち込んだ場合、その骨組みの堅固さは大きな岩盤のようであり、いかなる大地震があっても揺れ動くことがない。そのため、壁もわずかも損傷することがない。ゆえに、激しい風や大火の際にも類焼の恐れがない。私の親しい友人がこのようにして建てた土蔵が、先の卯年の大地震においても完全な状態を保っているのを見た。
〇私の製造法による土蔵は、四隅の柱だけは八寸角（約24センチ角）を使い、その内面の角を二寸（約6センチ）程度削り取るべきである。左の図のようにする。

The figure on the right shows the interior of the front entrance of a two-*ken* (approximately 3.6 meters) storehouse (*kura*), illustrating how cross-bracing (*sujichiigai*) made from boards split to one-*shaku* width has been inserted and nailed into notches cut in each pillar. In the case of construction by competitive tender (*nyūsatsu fushin*), very inexpensive rough timber and inferior wood are used as pillars without planing, so the carpenter's labor is not excessive. Nevertheless, when cross-bracing in an X-pattern is driven into all four interior walls as shown in the figure, the structural framework becomes as solid as a great bedrock, and will not shake even in the most severe earthquake. As a result, the walls suffer not even the slightest damage. Therefore, there is no fear of the fire spreading to the storehouse even in violent winds or great fires. I myself witnessed a close friend's storehouse, built in this manner, remain completely intact during the great earthquake of the recent Year of the Rabbit.
〇In my method of construction, only the four corner pillars should be made of eight-*sun* square timber (approximately 24 cm square), with the inner corners cut away by about two *sun* (approximately 6 cm). This should be done as shown in the figure on the left.
