右図の如く四隅（ヨスミ）の柱の内面の一角二寸程切去るは
其切かきたる処え内面左右の板割（イタワリ）をあて大釘にて
打附るに便利ならしめんが為（タメ）也尤四面の柱に五
寸角を用る時は四隅の柱も七寸角にて宜し四面の
柱六寸角を用る時は四隅の柱八寸角にすべし尤四
面の柱は四六歟五六角の悪木（アクボク）を用て四隅に八寸
角を用る時は下直（ゲヂキ）にして堅固（ケンゴ）なるべし

右図のように四隅の柱の内面の一角を二寸ほど切り取るのは、その切り欠いた箇所に内面左右の挽き割り板を当て、大釘で打ち付けるのに便利にするためである。なお、四面の柱に五寸角を用いる場合は、四隅の柱も七寸角でよい。四面の柱に六寸角を用いる場合は、四隅の柱は八寸角にすべきである。なお、四面の柱は四六あるいは五六角の粗末な木を用い、四隅に八寸角を用いる場合は、安価でありながら堅固なものとなるであろう。

The reason for cutting away approximately two sun from one corner of the interior face of each of the four corner pillars, as shown in the figure on the right, is to make it convenient to fit the interior left and right split boards (itawari) into the notched area and nail them in place with large nails. Note that when five-sun square timber is used for the pillars on all four sides, seven-sun square timber will suffice for the four corner pillars. When six-sun square timber is used for the four-sided pillars, the four corner pillars should be eight-sun square. Furthermore, when rough timber of four-by-six or five-by-six dimensions is used for the four-sided pillars, and eight-sun square timber is used for the four corners, the result will be both inexpensive and sturdy.
