第一にして格外堅固に製作するを専要(センヨウ)とせり故に
棟桁(ムナゲタ)合掌木(カツシヤウギ)もや垂木(タルキ)等は一切是を用ひず松檜

第一に、格別に堅固に製作することを最も重要とした。それゆえ、棟桁・合掌木・母屋・垂木などは一切これを用いず、松・檜などの背板(厚みのあるもの)をもって、地棟と地廻りの桁に、大きな船釘で打ち付けるのであり、その様子は左の図(第八図)の通りである。

For this reason, ridge beams (munageta), joined rafters (gasshōgi), purlins (moya), common rafters (taruki), and similar elements are dispensed with entirely. Instead, thick back-cut boards (seita) of pine, cypress, or similar timber are nailed directly to the ground ridge beam (jimune) and the perimeter beams (jimawari no keta) using large ship nails (funakugi), as shown in the figure to the left.
