背板を用意すること。そして、その内面と合わせ目をよく削り合わせ、ほどよい大きさの船釘をもって、地棟・地廻りの桁・中程の梁の三箇所に、一箇所につき三本ずつ打ち付け、棟上げの前後の板の小口を大きな鎹（かすがい）二挺ずつ打ち込んでつなぐべきである。大工の手間賃の費用は少なく、きわめて堅固であり、屋根の上から盗賊が入る心配もなく、鼠も入ることができない。地震・火災がどれほど激烈であっても、焼けず、壊れず、古今に比類のない建て方である。

Then carefully plane and fit their inner faces and joints together, and using ship nails of appropriate size, fasten them at three points: the ground ridge beam (jimune), the perimeter beams (jimawari no keta), and the central beam (hari), driving three nails at each point. The end-grain edges of the boards at the front and rear of the ridge should be joined by driving in two large clamps (kasugai) at each point. The carpentry costs are low, the construction is extremely sturdy, there is no risk of burglars entering through the roof, and even rats cannot get in.
