〇土臺(ドタイ)の石尺角三 重(ヂウ)五重に組揚(クミアゲ)たるもの去卯年の
大地震に悉く崩(クヅ)れたるを見たり且 石地蔵(イシヂゾウ)石燈籠(イシトウロウ)
石垣(イシガキ)等悉く崩れ倒(タホ)れたるを以て勘考(カンカウ)するに土台
の石も余り高きに過(スグ)るは地震の為には宜しからず
若三重以上になさんと欲するには悉く鎹(カスガヒ)を用ゆべし

震・風・火の災いもなく、きわめて堅固であろうということである。
○土台の石を三重・五重に組み上げたものが、去る卯年の大地震でことごとく崩れたのを見た。また、石地蔵・石灯籠・石垣なども、ことごとく崩れ倒れたことから考察するに、土台の石も、あまりに高くなりすぎるのは、地震に対しては好ましくない。もし三重以上に積もうとするならば、すべて鎹(かすがい)を用いるべきである。その方法は左図によって理解されたい。

○ Foundation stones stacked three or five tiers high were observed to have completely collapsed in the great earthquake of the recent Year of the Rabbit (U). Furthermore, considering that stone Jizō statues, stone lanterns, stone walls, and the like all likewise crumbled and toppled, it is clear that foundation stones piled too high are not suitable for withstanding earthquakes. If one wishes to stack them three tiers or more, all stones must be fastened together with clamps (kasugai). The method for doing so should be understood by referring to the figure on the left.
