〇大暴風・竜巻などの際には、必ず雨戸が吹き外れたり、吹き破られたりして、屋根裏に風が入り込み、大小の家屋が空中に吹き上げられたり吹き倒されたりする。それゆえ、倒壊した家屋による負傷者が多く出るのである。
そもそも、どの家屋においても、敷居・鴨居の溝の深さはわずか曲尺で二、三分程度しかなく、戸の縁（戸ぶち）はわずか一寸角に過ぎない。二階・一階ともに同様であり、その危険なことは言うまでもない。これを堅固にしようとするならば、雨戸の上下一尺ほどのところで、戸締りの便宜を考慮しながら、二か所ほど横に「ませ（閂・横木）」を入れて戸締りをするべきである。普段は下の「ませ」だけを用いて、夜中に出入りする際はそれをまたいで通ればよい。普段から上下の「ませ」を使えば、盗賊も入ることができず、大風・竜巻などにも非常に堅固で、家が巻き潰される恐れはなくなるであろう。これらの予防法について、平素からよくよく熟考すべきである。

〇During great storms and tornadoes, the rain shutters (amado) are invariably blown off or blown through, allowing wind to become trapped in the space beneath the roof, causing houses large and small to be lifted into the air or blown down.
