First, the construction of the building should follow the conventional bidding process (nyūsatsu-fushin), manufactured at as low a cost as possible; then, after the walls have been applied, these should be made solid. The method is as follows: with the same understanding as one would use in manufacturing the framework of the hinged earthen doors of a earthen storehouse (dozō), use planks one sun thick and eight sun wide, and in the left, right, front, back, top, and bottom of the house, make firm notches into each pillar, and—as shown in the figure on the left—drive diagonal braces in a cross (jūmonji) pattern firmly into place, then with large nails of three hundred me or more, attach three nails per pillar rigorously and securely. When this is done, even a two-story tile-roofed building will be as solid as bedrock, and no matter how violent

the earthquake or how fierce the great gale, there will be not the slightest risk of warping or bending.
The general outline should be understood from the figure on the left.
(Note: Regarding the method of notching for the diagonal braces, cut seven bu deep into the pillar and three bu deep into the plank. All subsequent cases should follow this same method.)
