【Right Page】
The figure on the right shows a two-story house with diagonal braces (sujikaI) installed in two places in a cross (jūmonji) pattern, cut and fastened beneath the horizontal weatherboards (shitami) on the left and right sides of the house. On all four sides—front, back, left, and right—wherever walls and weatherboards are to be attached, the diagonal braces should be fastened in this manner, and the weatherboards should then be nailed onto the surface over them. Furthermore, if in some locations it is difficult to drive in the diagonal braces from the exterior, one may cut and fasten them from the interior and cover the surface with fitted boards. This should be adapted according to the structure and layout of each house.
〇 For the frontages of houses along town streets, it may appear that there is no suitable place to attach diagonal braces. However, in the case of a two-story building, they should be cut and fastened in a cross pattern in the space between the top of the lintels (kamoi) and the threshold (shikii) of the partition doors on the second floor.
【Left Page】
If it is a single-story house (hiraya), they should be driven in a cross pattern in the space between the top of the lintel and the eave purlin (keta) running around the perimeter at ground level. If there are walls or shutter boxes (tobukuro) on the left or right sides, diagonal braces must invariably be cut and fastened in a cross pattern. Again, in places where it is difficult to drive them from the exterior, they should be driven from the interior. The general outline of this method should be understood from the figure on the left.
