書店紅英堂がある日私の草庵を訪れ、故人曲亭翁が詳しく述べた朝夷巡島記をひらがな文に翻訳してほしいと頼んだ。私は承諾した。原本は文化甲戌年（文化十一年、1814年）の刊行で、「島巡り」という題名は決して虚名ではない。その書は海外にまで広まり、高い評価は四方に響き渡った。そもそも翁の諸作品に手を広げることは、あの義秀が諸島を渡り歩くようなもので、年々数部の長編物語は長脚島の股引のように、引用する数冊に手の届く長臂島の棚探しも及ばない。あるいは読者が続編を求める様子は、女護島で南風を待つのと変わらない。ああ、自凝島の天地開闢以来、未曽有の大家の著作を、小人島の私のような者が拙い筆で翻訳することは恐れ多いことながら、書店の要請を固辞しがたく、この島巡りの船装い、舵よ櫓櫂よ帆よ苫よと並べ立てた筆硯紙墨（文房具）も揃った書机の元で、船はすでに錨を引き上げて福寿海の大海原に漕ぎ出し、黄金を積んで版元の蔵に入港することを望むばかりである。

The bookstore Koeidō visited my humble dwelling one day and requested that I translate the deceased Master Kyōtei's detailed "Record of the Morning Glory Island Pilgrimage" into hiragana script. I accepted. The original was published in the Bunka Kinoe-Inu year (Bunka 11, 1814), and the title "Island Wandering" is by no means empty. That book spread even overseas, and its high reputation resounded in all four directions. Indeed, the master's engagement with various works was like Yoshihide crossing various islands, and the annual multi-volume long tales are like the leggings of Long-leg Island - even the shelf-searching of Long-arm Island cannot match the reach to the many volumes of reference. Perhaps readers requesting sequels is no different from waiting for the south wind on Women's Island. Alas, since the creation of Onokoro Island, to translate the works of such an unprecedented great master with my poor brush from Little People Island is presumptuous, yet I cannot firmly refuse the bookstore's request. For this island wandering's ship preparation - rudder, oars, sail, and covering mat - all the writing implements (brushes, inkstones, paper, ink) are arranged at the writing desk. The ship has already raised anchor and set out into the great ocean of the Fukuju Sea, hoping to load treasure and enter the publisher's warehouse.
