三寸餘ニ至ルモノアリ早ク取捨レハ花ノ𦹷#1蕾ヲ喰折テ花ヲサカセズ大ニ害

牽牛の蠹虫　甲戌八月二日に写す
朝顔の茎や葉には全く虫が付かないものと人々は思っているが、風通しの悪い場所で葉が多く重なっているところには、ややもすればこの虫が付くことがある。この虫は月日を経ると極めて大きくなって、三寸余りに達するものもある。早く取り除かなければ、花の蕾を食い折って花を咲かせなくし、大いに害をなすものである。これは芋虫の類である。

People generally think that no insects ever attach to the stems and leaves of morning glory, but in places with poor air circulation where many leaves are layered together, this insect may occasionally appear. This insect becomes extremely large over the course of months, with some reaching over three sun in length. If not removed early, it will eat and break the flower buds, preventing flowers from blooming and causing great damage. This is a type of caterpillar.
