【右丁】
筍（タケノコ）の花　享和壬戌五月十七日、下谷六軒坊に住む空音と号する尼が、平素珍蔵している古い筍三本の下にこの花を生じた。往古より琴花と称するもののよし。文智が田安公の貴覧に備えると云う。顕微鏡を以て照らし観れば、茎は銀針のように光り、透き通ってテグスのように柔軟で強靭であり、力を極めて引っ張っても強くて切れにくい。《割書：その後ウドンゲの花が咲くということがあり、よくよく聞けば即ちこの物を指して言ったのであろう》

瑞軒が自分の園中で隨軍茶の枝間にこの物を生じた。一夜にして虫が出て左図のようであった。その後水野氏がこの物を持参して私に示し、提燈紙の上にあったと言う。私は「これは虫卵である。しかしながら何の虫であるかは詳しくわからない。往々にして見当たるものである。たまたま筍の上にあっては、常に人の見慣れぬものなので、筍の花と呼んで稀代のものとして珍重するのも、また理由のないことではない」と言った。また先年私の園中に生じたものを左に図示する。
小虫が出ない以前は卵は褐色である。出た後は中が空で透き通り、頭に一孔があり、色は潔白で瑩浄、美観である。

Bamboo shoot (takenoko) flower - On May 17th, Kyōwa 2nd year, year of the Water Dog, a nun called Kūon living in Rokkenbo, Shitaya, found this flower growing under three old bamboo shoots she had long treasured. This has been called "koto flower" since ancient times. Bunchi said it was prepared for the noble viewing of Lord Tayasu. When observed through a magnifying glass, the stem shines like a silver needle, is transparent like fishing line, flexible and tough, extremely strong when pulled with force and difficult to cut. {{Interlinear note: Later there was talk of udumbara flowers blooming, and upon careful inquiry, this was apparently what they were referring to}}

Zuiken found this growing among the branches of tea plants in his own garden. In one night, insects emerged as shown in the left diagram. Later, Mr. Mizuno brought this object to show me, saying it was found on lantern paper. I said, "This is an insect egg. However, I do not know in detail what kind of insect it is. It is something that is occasionally encountered. When it happens to appear on bamboo shoots, since people are not accustomed to seeing it, calling it a 'bamboo shoot flower' and treasuring it as something rare is not without reason." I also diagram on the left what appeared in my garden in previous years.
Before the small insects emerge, the eggs are brown in color. After they emerge, the inside is hollow and transparent, with one hole at the top, and the color is pure white, lustrous, clean, and beautiful in appearance.
