現代語訳

【右丁】
ナナフシは大毒虫である。
竹のフシ、ナナフシ、カゲトとも言い、毒虫である。前の手が長くて物を探りながら歩むことが遅い。盲人が杖を失って手探りで行くようである。蜘蛛の種類であるが、糸も出さない。赤黒色と青と褐色の三種がある。尾が長くて七節ある。そのためナナフシの名がある。

ワレカラという虫について萬香亭が鑑定を求められた。私が一見して奇妙だと思い、これはナナフシが水中に生ずるものであろうと答えた。毒虫であろう。己丑十一月十一日。

大小はこのとおりだが、小さなものは髭と共に五、六分ある。乾燥したものなので本来の色を知らない。白茅の細い根のようである。四脚はもろくて折れやすい。黄白色で透き通っている。

【Right page】
Nanafushi (stick insect) is a highly venomous insect.
Also called Takenofushi, Nanafushi, or Kageto, it is a poisonous insect. Its front legs are long and it walks slowly, groping for things. It moves like a blind person who has lost their walking stick and gropes their way forward with their hands. Though it is a type of spider, it does not produce silk. There are three varieties: reddish-black, blue, and brown. The tail is long with seven segments, hence the name Nanafushi (seven segments).

Regarding an insect called Warekara, Mankōtei requested an identification. At first glance I found it strange and answered that this must be a type of Nanafushi that lives in water. It is probably venomous. 11th day of the 11th month, Kinoto-Ushi year.

The size is as shown, but the small ones are five to six bu including the whiskers. Since these are dried specimens, I do not know their original color. They resemble fine roots of white cogon grass. The four legs are brittle and easily broken. They are yellowish-white and translucent.
