【右丁】
蜣蜋（きょうろう）　田村元雄家所蔵のもの　背と頭がむっくりと丸みがあり、甲の上に細かい条線がある。

クソムシ
糞中の不潔な地に産する。形は䗪虫（しみむし）のように黒くて長い。また鼠婦（だんごむし）にも似ている。質は柔軟である。ヨロイムシと呼ばれる一種は、鋸歯が粗く出て横に断続的な模様があり、黒い甲が紺青色に光るものがある。これをヨロイ虫と言う。爾雅に「蜉蝣は蜣蜋に似ているが長く、角があり、黄黒色で、糞土中に群生する」とある。蘭山の説では「甲の上に刷毛のような細い線条があるのが蜉蝣である」と言っている。

蜣蜋　一種の小型のもので、全身の形が四角である。髭はない。
黒い甲は堅固で、指頭で押しつぶしても砕けない。

蜣蜋　センチコガネ
前に図示したものに比べるとやや大きい。
糞中に生息する。このものは稀である。
羽があって飛ぶ。
腹および脚に赤褐色の小さな子がつくものは、
子のようである。

一種で糞土の不潔な地にいる。
その甲は軟らかい。

【Right page】
Kyōrō (Dung beetle) - Specimen from the Tamura Motoo family collection. The back and head have a plump roundness, and there are fine striations on the shell.

Kusomushi (Dung beetle)
Born in filthy places among excrement. Its form is black and long like a silverfish (shimiмushi), and also resembles a pillbug (sowbug). Its texture is soft. One type called Yoroimushi has coarse serrated teeth protruding with horizontal discontinuous patterns, and its black shell shines with a deep blue color. This is called Yoroi-mushi (armored insect). The Erya states: "Mayflies resemble dung beetles but are longer, have horns, are yellow-black in color, and live in clusters in dung and soil." According to Ranzan's theory, "those with fine striations like a brush on their shells are mayflies."

Kyōrō - One small variety with a square-shaped body overall. No whiskers.
The black shell is solid and cannot be crushed even when pinched with fingertips.

Kyōrō - Senchikogane
Somewhat larger compared to those illustrated previously.
Lives in excrement. This type is rare.
Has wings and flies.
Those with small reddish-brown young attached to the abdomen and legs appear to be offspring.
