現代語訳

【右丁】
地膽（じたん）　その形状は馬蟻（うまあり）に似ているが大きく、頭部から尾部まで長さ八〜九分ある。突き出た目と長い触角があり、触角には節がある。六本の脚があり、それぞれ五節からなり、各爪の先端は二股に分かれている。背上に短い翼を生じる。全体が黒い光沢を帯び、紺碧色に似た斑紋がある。両脇に細かい点がある。その毒性は斑蝥（はんびょう）と同様である。その臭気は臭く、鼻を刺激する。これは甲州（山梨県）石森村の産物で、土地の人々は「蟻おじ」と呼んでいる。

三月二十五日、野新田の野原で捕獲した地膽の一種で、大型のものである。脚の付け根に紺青色の光沢がある。

駿州龍爪山には罌子桐（えいしとう）が多くあり、その上に異虫がいる。全身黒色で、日光に映ると紫翠色に光沢があり、それに朱色の斑点が加わって燦然と輝き、愛らしく観賞に堪える。しかしその毒性は猛烈で斑蝥よりも酷いという。これは以前蘭山がその山を遊覧した際に自ら採集したものである。

再考するに、罌子桐は油桐のことである。俗名をドクエという。この油を少量でも食物に入れると腹痛や悶絶を起こし、甚だしい場合は死に至る。これを灯油にしたものが山間の家にはしばしばある。誤ってこの灯火を用いてその煙を吸うと、喉がたちまち閉塞して呼吸が困難になり、死に至ることがある。この葉を乾燥させて鼠穴に詰めると鼠が出入りできなくなり、細かく粉末にして飯の上に置いて与えると鼠が死ぬ。大毒のある木である。この葉につく虫であるから、その毒性の猛烈さは論ずるまでもなく理解できる。この虫の甲殻は堅く破壊しにくい。赤色の地に黒斑があるものもあり、黒い部分が瑠璃色に光るものもあり、一様ではない。

Jitan (Ground beetle) - Its form resembles a horse ant but is larger, measuring eight to nine bu (approximately 2.4-2.7 cm) from head to tail. It has protruding eyes and long antennae with segments. It has six legs, each with five segments, and each claw tip is bifurcated. Short wings grow on its back. The entire body has a black luster with markings resembling navy blue. There are fine dots on both sides. Its toxicity is the same as that of blister beetles (hanbyo). Its odor is foul and irritating to the nose. This specimen is from Ishimori Village in Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture), where locals call it "ari-oji."

On March 25th, I captured this type of large ground beetle in the fields of Noshinden. The base of its legs has a navy blue luster.

Mount Ryuso in Suruga Province has many tung trees (eishito), and on them lives a strange insect. Its entire body is black, and when sunlight hits it, it shines with purple-green luster, adorned with vermillion spots that sparkle brilliantly and are pleasing to observe. However, its toxicity is fierce, said to be more severe than blister beetles. This was personally collected by Ranzan when he toured that mountain in previous years.

Upon reconsideration, eishito is the tung tree. Its common name is "dokue." Even a small amount of this oil mixed into food causes severe abdominal pain and agony, and in extreme cases, death. Mountain households sometimes use this as lamp oil. If one mistakenly uses this lamp and inhales the smoke, the throat immediately constricts, making breathing difficult and potentially fatal. When the leaves are dried and stuffed into rat holes, rats cannot enter or exit. When ground into fine powder and placed on rice to feed them, rats die. This is a highly poisonous tree. Since this insect feeds on these leaves, its fierce toxicity is self-evident. This insect's carapace is hard and difficult to destroy. Some have black spots on a red background, others have black parts that shine with lapis lazuli color - they are not uniform.
