【左丁】
伏翼　すなわち蝙蝠（こうもり）、山こうもりで、耳が大きく全身褐色である。
　　　　ここに図示するものは山こうもりで、毛色は赤褐色である。
　　　　　　野州宇都宮辺りにはこの類に奇品が種々ある。牡
　　　　　　丹頭があり、鼻上に芝があり、八重牡丹花に似て
　　　　　　いる。菊花頭というものは八千重菊のような状態である。また兎
　　　　　　こうもりは耳が長く兎の耳に似て
　　　　　　いる。江戸には全くいない所である。いずれ
　　　　　　も山蝙蝠で、長年を経た老大なもので
　　　　　翼を張ると一尺八寸から二尺近くある。夜陰に飛行
　　　　　するときは烏や鳶のようである。多くは鍾乳を産
　　　　　する洞中に逆さまに懸かっている。松明を燃やして照らすと
　　　　　驚いて飛び立つ。翼を振る音は恐ろしいという。また
　　　　　百千匹中に偶然白色のものがあり、千歳
　　　　　を経た瑞物だというが、そうではない。今の雀や法師が
　　　　　純白であるのと同じである。

Fukuyoku - namely bat (koumori), a mountain bat with large ears and an entirely brown body.
　　　　What is illustrated here is a mountain bat with reddish-brown fur color.
　　　　　　Around Utsunomiya in Shimotsuke Province, there are various rare varieties of this species. There are
　　　　　　peony-headed ones with growths on their noses resembling
　　　　　　double peony flowers. What is called "chrysanthemum head" resembles the state of thousand-petaled chrysanthemums. Also, rabbit
　　　　　　bats have long ears resembling
　　　　　　rabbit ears. They are completely absent from Edo. All of these
　　　　　　are mountain bats that have grown old and large over many years.
　　　　　When they spread their wings, they span from one shaku eight sun to nearly two shaku. When flying
　　　　　at night, they resemble crows or kites. Most hang upside down
　　　　　in caves that produce stalactites. When torches are lit to illuminate them,
　　　　　they fly away in alarm. The sound of their beating wings is said to be frightening. Also,
　　　　　among hundreds or thousands, there are occasionally white ones, which people say are
　　　　　auspicious creatures that have lived a thousand years, but this is not so. It is the same as how sparrows and
　　　　　certain birds today can be pure white.
