「サンドイッチ諸島」には十三島あるいは十四島があると共に言う。
「クック」の航海中にこれを発見した。その物産はほとんど
「タヒチ」島と同じくして少なく豊富である。気候もまた相
類似する。土人は同種族であるけれども、体格は比較的矮小
にして
肌の色はさらに暗黒である。顔の部分は全島一定の様子がない。言
語は「タヒチ」および南洋諸島の言葉と出所はおそらく
同じである。しばしば人の談話といえども温和で緩やかで迫らない。土人は器械の
製造に力を尽くし、かつその精巧さは「タヒチ」に優る。

The "Sandwich Islands" are said to have thirteen or fourteen islands.
They were discovered during "Cook's" voyage. Their products are almost
the same as "Tahiti" island, being both scarce and abundant. The climate is also quite
similar. The natives are of the same race, but their physique is relatively short
and
their skin color is even darker. The facial features show no uniform appearance across the entire island group. The lan-
guage probably has the same origin as that of "Tahiti" and other South Pacific islands.
Even frequent human conversation is gentle, relaxed, and unhurried. The natives devote their efforts to the
manufacture of implements, and their sophistication surpasses that of "Tahiti."
That is, in their precise woven mats ("mats"), clothing, vessels, weapons, fishing gear, etc.
