○ The ship sailed over fifty ri, tacking (折艙, maneuvering against the wind) toward the southwest. After approximately fourteen or fifteen days, they emerged between the two small islands of "Rohatoka" and "Urumureri" off the cape of "Kamusatsuka" (Kamchatka). [Note added in red in the margin: "Rohatoka" is not an island name.] Although this strait was only about two ri wide, it was extremely treacherous. Once the ship had passed through safely, a great banquet was held to celebrate their safe passage. They sailed a further five days or more, and in the open sea to the east of the cape, they cast a sounding lead (おもり). At a depth of thirty fathoms, aquatic weeds were found attached to the bottom of the lead. Advancing another ri or so, they cast the lead again, finding a depth of one hundred and fifty fathoms with mud attached. After three more days, they sighted the mountains near "Ohotsuka" (Okhotsk), but having gone off course, they had already overshot their destination by more than twenty ri.
○ Around the tenth day of the seventh month, in the afternoon, they entered the "Ohotsuka" (Okhotsk) River. Twenty natives came to the bank to welcome them and helped tow the vessel with ropes (縴索). The ship again accidentally ran aground on a submerged sandbar, and as the tide went out, the vessel listed to one side. The foreigners [Russians] scrambled about frantically to unload the ship's cargo. The following day, they moored at the "Kanpaniya" (Company) port, and proceeded on foot along the sandy shore to the town of Okhotsk. As they passed by a warehouse, a single soldier was standing guard in the guardhouse. His bearing and appearance were dignified and proper. The guests laughed and remarked, "How could that man be so solemn and serious at all times? He is merely putting on a fierce face (鬼の顔) for our benefit."
○ The name of the commanding governor (鎮酋) was "Nikaiuwekoroshi," who had come to govern from "Mosukow" (Moscow) on a seven-year posting, and had already served three years. The guests went to the official residence for an audience. He offered many words of comfort and encouragement. They were finally received into the residence... (continues)
