### 生類（動物・生き物について）
○水鳥の小さなものが群れをなしているものがある。ロシア人は銃に散弾五十余粒を込めて撃つ。鳥はその性質が鋭敏で、銃声に応じて水中に潜ってしまう。そのため、異国人はあらかじめ鳥が水に潜るまでの時間を計算し、水中に向けて撃つ。一群れは十四、五羽ほどで、一発で三、四羽を獲ることができる。また、別の種に、極めて小さく蝉ほどの大きさで、羽毛が華麗な鳥がある。異国人はこれを銃で撃って内臓を取り除き、乾燥・塩漬けの標本にして帝都（首都）に献上する。都城には大きな博物庫があり、領内の動植物の品々を有用・無用に分類して収蔵している。必ず絵に描いてその様子を献上させる仕組みになっている。これは広大な領内をすべて帝（皇帝）自ら巡視することができないためであり、各地の産物・土地の特産物を調べるためのものである。

### Living Creatures (Fauna)
○ Among waterfowl, there are small birds that form flocks. Russian hunters load their guns with over fifty pellets of scatter shot and fire. The birds are by nature sharp and alert; at the sound of the gun, they dive underwater. Therefore, the foreigners calculate in advance the depth to which the birds dive and shoot into the water. A flock numbers around fourteen or fifteen birds, and with one shot, three or four birds can be taken. There is also another species, extremely small—about the size of a cicada—with brilliantly beautiful plumage. The foreigners shoot these with guns, remove the entrails, preserve them as dried specimens, and present them as tribute to the imperial capital. In the capital city, there is a great repository (natural history storehouse) where the fauna and flora of the realm are classified as useful or useless and stored. Illustrations of every species must be drawn and submitted. This is because the vast expanse of the territory makes it impossible for even the Emperor himself to personally inspect it all, and so local products and regional specialties are examined and documented in this manner.
