Kamatari replied, "What should I speak of? I only wish that my funeral rites be kept simple. Having lived without benefit to the nation, why should I trouble people in death?" There was no one at the time who was not moved by this. Later, the Emperor sent his younger brother Emperor Tenmu to Kamatari's house, where Kamatari was appointed to the position of Naidaijin (Inner Minister) and granted the court rank of Taishoukwan. His surname was changed from Nakatomi, and he was given the new surname Fujiwara for the first time. This was the beginning of the Naidaijin position. However, at this time, it ranked above the Ministers of the Left and Right. Taishoukwan was a court rank equivalent to Shoichii (Senior First Rank). Fujiwara was the name of the place where Kamatari was born. He took the name of his place of origin as his surname. Not long after, the Taishoukwan passed away at the age of fifty, or some say fifty-six. Ten-
