生け捕りにした。即座に進んで瀬田まで来たので、大友皇子は自ら群臣を率いて、橋の西に陣を敷いた。互いに鐘や鼓を打ち鳴らし、弓矢が乱れ飛んで雨のようであった。大友皇子の大将智尊という者は、優れた勇士であって、防ぎ戦ったので、敵は進むことができなかった。やがて智尊が討ち死にした。大友皇子の軍は散り散りになって逃走した。男依は橋を越えて粟津に至った。大友皇子の大将である犬養連・塩手らは皆討ち死にした。大友皇子は行く所もなく、山前に隠れて、自ら首を縊って死んだ。その時二十五歳であった。その首を取って、天武天皇のいらっしゃる所へ送った。高市皇子が近江へ来て、罪の軽重を調べて、右大臣中臣金連を切り殺し、左大臣蘇我赤兄ら数名を流罪とした。壬申の乱とはこれのことである。

Prince Ōtomo's army scattered and fled. Oyori crossed the bridge and reached Awazu. Prince Ōtomo's generals Inukai no Muraji and Shiote were all killed in battle. Prince Ōtomo, having nowhere to go, hid at Yamashiro and hanged himself. He was twenty-five years old at the time. His head was taken and sent to where Emperor Tenmu was staying. Prince Takechi came to Ōmi and investigated the severity of crimes, executing Right Minister Nakatomi no Kane no Muraji and exiling Left Minister Soga no Akaene and several others. This is what is called the Jinshin War.
