現代語訳
神亀元年二月、右大臣長屋王が左大臣となった。十月、紀伊国玉津島の和歌の浦に行幸した。
四年、勅使を諸国へ派遣し、国司の政治を改めさせた。また百官の善悪を記録した。
五年、渤海の使者が来朝して、貢物を奉った。渤海は、高句麗の残存部族である。これより先、高句麗国は、大唐（唐）に滅ぼされた。その僅かに残った者を、渤海国と号した。
天平元年正月、左大臣長屋王に謀反の心があるとの噂があったので、式部卿藤原宇合等を派遣して、長屋王の家を包囲し、また舎人親王等を派遣して、その罪を問わせた。長屋王は自害した。その妻子は皆殺された。長屋王は、天武天皇の孫で高市皇子の子である。
八月、藤原光明子を立てて皇后とした。これも不比等の娘である。

In the first year of Jinki, second month, Right Minister Prince Nagaya became Left Minister. In the tenth month, there was an imperial visit to Tamatsushima in Waka-no-ura, Kii Province.
In the fourth year, imperial envoys were dispatched to all provinces to reform the administration of provincial governors. The good and evil deeds of all officials were also recorded.
In the fifth year, envoys from Balhae came and presented tribute. Balhae was a remnant tribe of Goguryeo. Before this, the kingdom of Goguryeo had been destroyed by the Tang Dynasty. Those who barely survived were called the kingdom of Balhae.
In the first year of Tenpyō, first month, there were rumors that Left Minister Prince Nagaya harbored treasonous intentions, so Minister of Civil Affairs Fujiwara no Umakai and others were dispatched to surround Prince Nagaya's residence, and Prince Toneri and others were sent to interrogate him about his crimes. Prince Nagaya committed suicide. His wife and children were all killed. Prince Nagaya was the grandson of Emperor Tenmu and the son of Prince Takechi.
In the eighth month, Fujiwara no Kōmyōshi was made Empress. She was also a daughter of Fuhito.
