五年正月、長屋王を右大臣とした。明経博士、並びに才芸ある者に物を賜った。十二月、太上天皇（元明天皇）が崩御した。享年六十一歳。
八年正月、天皇は位を聖武天皇に譲った。太上天皇と号した。在位は霊亀二年、養老七年で、合わせて九年間であった。
第四十五代
聖武天皇 文武天皇の太子である。母は藤原夫人宮子という。贈太政大臣藤原不比等の娘である。文武天皇が崩御した時、聖武天皇は幼少であったため即位しなかった。元明天皇の代に十四歳で太子となり、元正天皇の代に政務を預かり聞こし召した。ここに至って、譲位を受けて皇位に就いた。

In the fifth year, first month, Prince Nagaya was made Right Minister. Rewards were given to doctors of classical learning (myōkyō hakase) and those with talents and skills. In the twelfth month, the Retired Emperor (Empress Genmei) died at the age of sixty-one.
In the eighth year, first month, the Emperor abdicated the throne to Emperor Shōmu and was styled Retired Emperor. The reign lasted for Reiki 2 years and Yōrō 7 years, totaling nine years.
45th Emperor
Emperor Shōmu - He was the crown prince of Emperor Monmu. His mother was called Fujiwara Lady Miyako. She was the daughter of the posthumously appointed Grand Minister Fujiwara no Fuhito. When Emperor Monmu died, Shōmu did not immediately ascend the throne because he was still young. During Empress Genmei's reign, he became crown prince at age fourteen, and during Empress Genshō's reign, he took charge of and participated in government affairs. At this point, he received the abdication and ascended to the throne.
